1887, 1913
From 1906 to 1918, Dr. Henry Herbert Goddard was the Director of Research at the Training School for Feeble-Minded Girls and Boys in Vineland, New Jersey.
Dr. Ladd's peer and contemporary, Dr. Goddard was a prominent American psychologist and eugenicist in the early 20th century, known primarily for his the seminal work The Kallikak Family: A Study in the Heredity of Feeble-Mindedness. He was also the first to translate the Binet intelligence test into English, and introduced the term "moron" into the clinical vernacular.
The Kallikak Family — a book held in high regard and referred to by Dr. Ladd in his personal letters — was first published in 1912 and reprinted for thirteen editions over twenty years. Our copy is the second edition, published in 1913. Case bound in blue pulpboard, the cover is heavy, unblemished, and snappy, and the interior pages are thick, clean, and bright. A short, penciled inscription in the front matter is practically illegible. It's a near-perfect specimen.
The accompanying cabinet card, produced in 1887, depicts a young Henry Goddard in the year of his graduation at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master's degree in mathematics.
"Property of A.B. Clement," it says in a handwritten inscription on the reverse side. "Until fall."
